How To Care For Wool Blankets: An Ultimate Guide

Wool blankets are a fantastic investment for any household. Not only are they cozy and warm, but they also have a timeless style that can add a touch of elegance to any room. However, it is important to take proper care of your wool blankets to ensure that they last for many years to come. In this ultimate guide, we provide you with tips and tricks for caring for your wool blankets.

1.      Read the Care Label

The first and most important step in caring for your wool blanket is to read the care label. The care label will provide you with important information on how to care for your blanket. It will tell you if the blanket can be machine washed, dry cleaned, or if it needs to be hand washed. It will also tell you the appropriate water temperature and detergent to use.

2.      Hand Wash Your Wool Blanket

If your wool blanket needs to be hand washed, fill a sink or bathtub with cool water and add a mild detergent specifically designed for wool. Gently agitate the water to distribute the detergent. Place the blanket in the water and let it soak for 5-10 minutes. Then, gently squeeze the water through the blanket. Do not wring or twist the blanket, as this can damage the fibers. Rinse the blanket thoroughly with cool water, and then gently press out any excess water.

3.      Machine Wash Your Wool Blanket

If your wool blanket can be machine washed, use a gentle cycle with cool water and a mild detergent specifically designed for wool. Do not use bleach or fabric softener, as these can damage the fibers. After the wash cycle is complete, remove the blanket from the machine and gently press out any excess water. Do not wring or twist the blanket.

4.      Deal With Stains Immediately

If your wool blanket gets stained, it is important to deal with the stain immediately. Blot the stain with a clean, damp cloth and then gently rub it in a mild detergent specifically designed for wool. Rinse the area thoroughly with cool water and then gently press out any excess water. Do not scrub or rub the stain, as this can damage the fibers.

5.      Dry Your Wool Blanket

After washing, it is important to dry your wool blanket properly. Do not hang your wool blanket to dry, as this can cause it to stretch out of shape. Instead, lay the blanket flat on a clean, dry towel and gently press out any excess water. Then, roll up the towel and blanket together to remove any remaining water. Unroll the towel and blanket, and then lay the blanket flat on a drying rack or a clean, dry surface. Do not dry your wool blanket in direct sunlight or in a dryer, as this can damage the fibers.

6.      Use a Fabric Shaver

Over time, wool blankets can develop small balls of fuzz, also known as pilling. This is a natural occurrence and is caused by the fibers rubbing against each other. To remove the pills, use a fabric shaver or a pair of scissors. Gently shave the surface of the blanket with the fabric shaver to remove the pills. If using scissors, gently cut the pills off the surface of the blanket.

7.      Store Your Wool Blanket

When not in use, it is important to store your wool blanket properly. Fold it neatly and store it in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight and moisture. Do not store your wool blanket in a plastic bag or container, as this can trap moisture and lead to mold and mildew growth.
